Tutor Training Checklist Aligned to CRLA ITTPC Levels 1 to 3

A one-page planning checklist for learning centers building or renewing a certified peer tutor training program.

This checklist summarizes the College Reading and Learning Association's International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) requirements as published on crla.net in October 2026. CRLA revises its requirements; check the current version before you apply.

Before training: selection (all levels)

  • Verify a grade of A or B in each content area the tutor will tutor, or justified equivalent experience.
  • Get a recommendation from a content expert, usually faculty in the subject.
  • Interview every candidate.
  • For Levels 2 and 3, verify the tutor completed every requirement for the level before. Levels are sequential.

Topic categories by level

  • Level 1: Basics (4), Communication (2), Learning or Studying (2), Ethics and Equity (1), Electives (1).
  • Level 2: a review of Level 1 Basics plus Basics (2), Communication (2), Learning or Studying (3), Ethics and Equity (1), Electives (1).
  • Level 3: a review of Level 1 and 2 Basics plus Basics (2), Communication (2), Learning or Studying (2), Ethics and Equity (1), Electives (2).

What does not count as tutoring hours

CRLA counts only direct tutoring. Front desk coverage, Supplemental Instruction sessions, and planning time do not count toward the 25 hours at each level.

Planning checklist

  1. Map every training session to one topic category, and keep a one-line description of each.
  2. Mark which sessions are trainer-led, interactive, and synchronous, so each level clearly reaches five hours.
  3. Track training hours and direct tutoring hours per tutor in one sheet, with dates.
  4. Schedule at least one evaluation per tutor per level, such as an observed session with a rubric.
  5. Keep sign-in records for training and the selection documents for each tutor.
  6. Decide who issues tutor certificates and when, and how a tutor moves to the next level.
  7. Put your program's certification renewal date on the calendar.

Looking for colleagues who have been through certification? Several Michigan centers in the MICLCA directory show a CRLA certification mark. ICLCA also offers program and leadership certifications.
